Getting Out Of The Ruts in Your Life

It is easy for adults to develop patterns of living and then not change them as the years pass by. This is similar to getting into a rut and not deviating from it in the future. The word rut can refer to a track in the ground made by the passage of a wagon or vehicle. It is also a fixed or established mold or procedure, or a course one follows in life. A rut is usually dull or unpromising and for this reason people often say that they have fallen into a rut.

Think about your life today and the way you live it. Consider the ways that you do different things. Review the habits you’ve formed. You should see that there are definite patterns of living in all aspects of your life. Many of these work in your favor, and should be maintained. Others are not good and should be modified or improved in the future. The emphasis in this article is getting out of the bad ruts and replacing them with good ones.

The problem with falling into a rut, is that it’s harder to get out then it is to get in. You must first recognize that you’re in a rut and some changes are required. Then effort must be put forth to make the appropriate changes in your life. Usually the longer you’ve been in the rut, the deeper it gets or it becomes a more permanent part of your life and its influence grows with time. This makes it harder to get out of it. In the process you must establish a new or better pattern of doing something. Usually you must make some personal changes and live differently in the future. Work, endurance and patience are required. But once a better pattern is established, you’ll recognize its benefits and be happy you made the change.

How do you know if you’re in a rut and need to make a change? The most general response is that with negative ruts, you get well established and fixed in patterns of living so you’re not open to positive change. This is not a good, healthy or an intelligent way to live. People in such ruts usually do not explore, nor strive to learn new things. They are not curious. There is a lack of flexibility and adaptability. This makes it hard to modify oneself or aspects of your life. For this reason there is a tendency to resist change. People in negative ruts are usually two conservative in their approach to life. Over the years they stay the same person in too many ways. In essence we could say they are too set in their ways and their ways do limit them.

Unfortunately over a period of time the ruts in our lives become deeper. It’s harder to get out of them. For positive ruts this is good, but for negative ruts this is bad. The individual becomes more trapped as he follows the same rut, and it becomes deeper over time. Eventually he’s trapped in it. This is why it is so important to monitor patterns of living and make appropriate changes as soon as possible when the rut is shallow and not deep.

For too many people it takes a major event or strong external force to wake them up or jar them out of their mental stupor. Then they will take action. Some examples are a death in the family, a serious health problem, lose of a job, a natural disaster, or major financial problems. Hopefully, you are not such an individual.

Fortunately many people can see the ruts in their lives. They understand how they can get set in their ways. They can choose to do something about this because they want to act, rather than have to act. Such people will do what it takes to seek out the best patterns of living and remain open to new and good patterns in the future. They will always be curious and desire to learn. They will remain flexible. They will adapt to new people and circumstances. In these and other ways ,they will avoid falling into ruts that work against them as they walked down the road of life. They will be able to make more progress along the way and have more happiness too.
