THINGS TO CONSIDER TODAY    - A column by Leland Pulley that looks at issues and concerns in the lives of people and provides insights to help address them.

Political Action By Citizens

They say that democracy is a very slow and inefficient form of government. A benign dictator can get things done faster, but a ruthless ruler will do things that are not good for the people. I’d prefer the democratic route. The benefit of democracy is that power is distributed among many individuals. This helps to protect the freedoms and rights of all citizens.

In a democracy like the United States, the government has remained stable even though there have been several social and political changes over the past few decades. I’ve seen periods of little political unrest. But other times an issue will come up or a cause will develop that catches the interest and attention of people. They begin to talk among themselves, organize, and soon they’re acting up and acting out to demonstrate their displeasure and frustration and anger over a civic issue.

Good Financial Planning Will Help You

More people today are having financial problems for a variety of reasons.  No one seems to be immune.  It can happen to us, as well as anyone else.  I think each of us know someone who is experiencing some type of financial problem at this time.  For everyone, the bills continue to come in and the cost of living continues to go higher. What can be done to make it through these tough times and be prepared for future economic problems?

There are some major variables that affect all of us.

LIFE IN THE MIDDLE TODAY  - A column by Colleen Pulley that illustrates how to face the challenges of life, make choices, and move onward; and in the process experience more joys along the way.

The Things We Put In The Back Pack Of LIfe Need To Include Others

In April, 2006 I wrote an article about the clutter that accumulates in a woman’s purse. The other night my husband took me to the movie “Up In The Air”. Talk about coincidence! There was George Clooney as the leading man giving a talk on the backpack theory of living. In some ways I felt almost robbed.

George Cloony played the role of a “free” man, who had no attachments in his life. No wife, children, mortgage, friends. His life time goal is to become a frequent flier with 10 million miles. Along the path to his goal he meets a woman, named Alex.. She, like him, is a traveling executive. At different times their air flight paths cross and they meet for a quick get together. When they meet, they often compare each others travel cards and company perks, then they go their separate ways.

When Adult Children Come Home

Like many parents of young adults, we have experienced the return, at different times of grown children to our home. This really lets you know how much stamina you have. You expect your children to go off to college or get a job after highschool, then eventually get their own home, have a family, and give you some grandchildren to love and enjoy.

The image you have in your forties and fifties included travel, walks along the beach, money to buy a sporty, fun car to zip around in, and of course a healthy sex life; with or without the help of Viagra. The reality has turned into something entirely different for many Baby Boomers.

America Isn't Poor

I was watching a comedy show the other night with my husband and the comedian did a short skit about “depressed Americans.” He poked fun at us as a society because we think we’re so poor while other people around the world have so much less. There was a fundamental truth bared under the jokes.

We have very little perspective about hardship when compared to the rest of the world. Even if, for whatever reason, we are unable to keep steady employment; we live in a country where if we can’t pay for things, we can go out and ask for help.

Being Like The Good Samaritan

Everyone has heard the Biblical story of the Good Samaritan. It's pretty simple. A man is robbed and beaten, and left on the side of the road. People pass him by, ignoring him, until one man stops and offers aid. This man has compassion for the stranger, and his concern leads to action. This is kindness of one stranger to another, but the message is a powerful one, and the story teaches a great lesson.

In the last two weeks, I had some things happen to me that illustrated in my mind the heart of this story
